Hi Again Everyone,
Tuesday’s Meetup was a great success, and I hope all those that went had a great time. I know I did! Our speaker Biram was very informative and led an engaging discussion on the issues affecting the people of The Gambia. Biram has many varied interests including journalism and medical research. As a former teacher and school administrator Biram is a community leader working with a group of young people volunteering their time to improve their community by providing training programs and education. Inspired by Biram’s speech we decided in conjunction with the non-profit United Planet and Uno’s Chicago Grill to create a fundraiser for Biram and his club. On Monday November 2nd at the Boylston Uno’s (across from the Prudential Center) with a valid ticket Uno’s will donate 20% of your bill to United Planet/Biram. The promotion is valid all day and on take-out. The ticket can be found in the meetup album. You must have a copy with you in order to make a donation. I encourage you to invite friends, family, and coworkers. I have not created a formal meetup for this event so that the maximum amount of people may attend, but for those interested in meeting Biram he will be at the Boylston Uno’s starting at 5pm. All the money that United Planet receives from this fundraiser will be given to Biram and his club so that they may continue to improve the lives of the people in their community. I also want to thank all of you who have already made a donation it is greatly appreciated.

Mr. Msangi comes from the Kilimanjaro region and has taught in various regions of Tanzania for over 37 years. Mr. Msangi oversees the development and implementation of projects which benefit the Kwala community, including the construction of a library, a large donation of books for students in Forms 1-4, a girls scholarship program, computer/internet installation, and the proposal for the construction of new latrines for staff and students.

We are so excited for our second event! The Boston Volunteer Abroad Meetup Group is hosting a get-together and celebration of International Volunteer Day on December 5, 2007!
International Volunteer Day (IVD) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. IVD is now celebrated world wide with thousands of volunteers involved in a range of IVD initiatives, including clean-up campaigns, conferences, exhibitions, morning teas and many other activities all aimed to highlight the role of volunteers in their communities.

You can also check out the United Nations website for more information on the history of IVD and the impact you can make as an international volunteer.

Join us to celebrate this meaningful day. Hope to see all the members there!
