Why celebrate in the rain when this Sunday's forecast looks sunny and mild? Join Potomac Conservancy this Sunday for our second annual Potomac River Jam - A day-long celebration of the river and canal. Various local musicians will perform acoustic sets throughout the afternoon.
Enjoy events such as a morning bird walk, nature photography session, and a tree identification and medicinal plant walk. Canoe trips over to Minnie?s Island will be offered. Bring the kids for face-painting and other activities. All events are free.

Volunteers Needed for Trail/Canoe Launch Construction
Thursday, September 17 and Friday, September 18, 9am-3pm (both days)
River Center at Lockhouse 8, C&O National Historical Park, Cabin John, MD 20818
The Conservancy, in partnership with the National Park Service's Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance program, will be building a canoe/kayak launch near Lock 8 on the C&O Canal towpath. This launch will provide low water access to the Potomac River. Launch and trail construction will take place over two days, Thursday and Friday, September 17 and 18. To volunteer, contact Bridget Chapin at chapin@potomac.org.

Volunteer Day at Lock 8

The Conservancy and the National Park Service are working to improve the area around Lock 8. On our Volunteer Day, we will remove an old stairway down to the river, and plant native shrubs in its place. Also, we will do trail maintenance along the path to the river. Enjoy the great outdoors with a canoe trip and a night of camping under the stars and wake up on our island in the Potomac. Outfitter Byron Bradley will lead the Saturday afternoon canoe trip that will start at Carderock Picnic Area and end on Minnie?s Island (near Lock 8 on the C&O Canal). Bring your own camping gear, food, and water. Must RSVP to tricarico@potomac.org by September 16th. Bring your own canoe or if one is needed reserve one in your RSVP. The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children. More detailed information will follow the RSVP.

Join the Conservancy for a walk along the C&O Canal to learn about mushrooms with mushroom enthusiast Buddy Kilpatrick. Buddy has been studying, picking, and eating wild edible mushrooms and fungi for more than 20 years. He has served as president and newsletter editor of a local mycological organization, and is currently a member of the Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club. Buddy has also taught adult education courses in mushroom foraging at Chautauqua Institution and Arlington County Adult Education, and has presented mushroom and plant workshops at a number of regional events. He has a PhD in public policy from George Mason University, and in real life is an economic policy consultant. Please RSVP.
Get Nuts for Clean Water...
Come join in the fun this weekend at one of three Growing Native seed collections.
Spend a few hours collecting native, hardwood seeds in an effort to keep our waters clean by protecting healthy forests along the banks of our rivers and streams.
Bring a friend; Potomac Conservancy will provide the supplies and show you the ropes.

Abby Ybarra is an environmentalist who walks the spiritual Red Road of Native American culture which continues influence his view of ? and commitment to - the environment and this earth we live on. He brings that Native outlook of stewardship and conservation to those he works with and those he teaches. He will talk about tribal relationships with water and compare to principles of water science. He encourages people to ?find their heart for matters that deal with the environment.?
